The Naruto franchise has received a lot of video game releases over the years, with the most recent being Naruto Shippuden Legends Akatsuki Rising on the Sony PSP.

The latest video game release follows the Akatsuki conflict, a threat that is bearing down on Naruto, who is now a teenager.

The main game here revolves around the well-done story mode, which is called Scenario Mode.

The Scenario Mode showcases a story from the Naruto universe that is well-told and stays true to the franchise, especially if you are a fan of the series and of anime in general.

The way in which the gameplay works here is a bit lackluster unfortunately, as the battle system seems a tad too clunky for my personal taste. The various missions that they throw you into though are a lot of fun, and the story mode is long enough that it will keep you busy for hours.

The longevity comes into play as you get to unlock more characters and such with the more you play, also giving you the option to purchase items such as health packs and other things to aid your characters.

The visuals here on the PSP are pretty decent, but far from award-winning. The character models are probably my biggest gripe as I would have liked to see more in terms of brighter colors and details on them, especially on the clothing and in the faces. Cut-scenes also leave a lot to be desired.

The audio presentation here is strong, I especially liked playing through it with the original Japanese voices, the score is quite good as well.

This latest Naruto release makes for a respectable action game on the PSP that fans of the franchise will probably enjoy, but it does not have enough to it to really warrant a full purchase. The game has some fantastic modes of play that try to keep things fresh, but the game feels like it is just missing that fun-factor unfortunately. Best kept as a rental for Naruto fans.

Naruto has a large number of characters, most of whom are ninjas. They initially study at the Ninja Academy, where the story begins, are split up into squads of three after their graduation and become Genin, rookie ninja. Each squad is assigned an experienced sensei. These core squads form a basis for the characters’ interactions later in the series, where characters are chosen for missions for their team’s strength and complementary skills; Naruto’s squad 7 becomes the social frame where Naruto is acquainted with Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, and their sensei Kakashi Hatake, forming the core of his world-in-the-making. The other three-man teams of his former classmates form another such layer, as Naruto connects with them to various degrees, learning of their motives, vulnerabilities, and aspirations. The groups of three are not limited to the comrades Naruto’s age – groups in the story in general come in threes and multiples of three.



In the Naruto world, countries operate as separate political entities ruled by landlords. Within these countries are hidden villages (隠れ里, kakurezato?), settlements housing ninja, warriors capable of using supernatural abilities in combat. A hidden village maintains the economy of the parent country by training ninja from a young age and using them to perform missions for other countries. The ninja of a hidden village also serve as the military force of their parent country. The leaders of the hidden villages hold equal status with the leaders of their respective countries. Five countries in the Naruto world—the Land of Earth, the Land of Fire, the Land of Lightning, the Land of Water, and the Land of Wind—are known as the “Five Great Shinobi Nations”. These countries are the most powerful in the Naruto world. They are ruled by a feudal lord, and the leaders of the hidden villages in these countries hold the title of Kage. Other apparently smaller nations have been named in passing, in either the manga or anime, but are yet to be explored.

Naruto Shippuuden 99 “Raging Tailed Beast” airs on March 5th artwork by ashperado Orochimaru (大蛇丸), featured in the Japanese folktale Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari, is the arch-enemy of the ninja Jiraiya. He was once named Yashagorō (夜叉五郎) and was one of Jiraiya’s followers, but he was overtaken by serpent magic. Having changed his name to “Orochimaru”, he gained the ability to turn himself into a giant serpent. He attacked Jiraiya and his wife Tsunade and defeated them with his venom (only for another follower to save the couple’s lives afterwards). “Orochi” is the name of a giant eight-headed snake in Japanese mythology. The kanji (大蛇, usually pronounced daija) literally mean “giant snake” or “serpent”.
